Why I Quit Sales To Become A Ticket Broker

It took me a while to find my dream job. Like most people, I had my share of hard-ache and disappointment, of grinding through late nights and under-appreciation, and the always unpleasant sensation that life had passing me by. That’s when I decided to become a ticket broker. And now, as I look back, I appreciate those initial struggles for all their contributions to the work ethic I have today.

Job #1

In my first job out of college, an amazing opportunity presented itself to me to become a managing partner of a Restaurant Group. Any 22-year-old would jump at the opportunity to “own” something, right? Over the next year, the restaurant grew from 1 to 3 to 5 franchises. My young, naïve self worked 100-hour weeks while managing 200 people in 5 restaurants across 4 states. I thought I was king of the world- I mean, who wouldn’t?! I owned my own business. Sure enough, reality set in. By year two, I was completely burnt out. 4 of the 5 restaurants went under and the 100 hour, 7-day work weeks got the best of me. I decided to leave the restaurateur pipe dream and moved my penniless-self back home with mom and dad.

Job #2

Career number two presented a new challenge. At the time, I only knew the hospitality business, so I dove headfirst into Wedding/Catering Sales. The first year was a doozy. This was a full-on, ‘build your book from scratch’ sales job. I had to wear a suit every day, attend networking events 3-4 days per week, schedule meetings with decision-makers, make cold-calls, knock on every business door in the Metropolitan area, etc.. By year two, I had built my book to 30 weddings and 20 corporate clients and by year three, 50 weddings and 50 corporate clients. The business was thriving, but sadly I was not. Once again, that burnt-out phase hit me like a ton of bricks.

Job #3

Career option three- I thought it was the one. A sales job with a 9-state territory! On the road for five days per week, sleeping in hotels and eating fast food on the turnpike while speeding to my appointment in no-man’s-land Pennsylvania. Yea, that lasted about 9 months.

My next career needed to be more rewarding; something I would have fun doing. Being on my feet, traveling all the time, wearing suits and networking- I wanted to work from home, have more time for my growing family, and most importantly, more time for myself- I wanted freedom.
